About This Species
The largest toothed whale, reaching 16-20m in males and 11-12m in females, with the characteristic massive square head comprising 25-35% of body length. Found in deep oceanic waters worldwide, these highly social whales dive to extreme depths (over 2,000m) for up to 90 minutes to hunt squid and deep-sea fish. Females live in stable matrilineal groups with cooperative care, while mature males are largely solitary.
