About This Species
Arctic specialist whale (4-4.6m length, up to 1,600kg) famous for males' spiral ivory tusk reaching 3m long. Stocky body with mottled grey-black coloration that whitens with age, shallow dorsal ridge instead of fin. Lives in tight social groups, deep-diving specialist feeding on Arctic cod, Greenland halibut, and squid. Restricted to Arctic Ocean waters around pack ice.
