About This Species

One of the largest Mesoplodon species, reaching 6.2m and 1,300kg. Distinctive for males' extremely long curved tusks that grow over the upper jaw, potentially limiting mouth opening to 11-13cm. Adults show distinctive white coloration on beak, cape extending halfway to dorsal fin, and white-tipped dorsal fin and flukes. Found in cold temperate to subantarctic waters of Southern Hemisphere, diving to great depths to feed on squid, fish, and crustaceans.
