About This Species
Closely related to the North Atlantic species but genetically distinct, these large whales reach similar sizes (14-18m) and share the characteristic right whale body plan with prominent callosities and no dorsal fin. Found in North Pacific waters from the Sea of Okhotsk to the Gulf of Alaska, feeding primarily on copepods and small crustaceans. Population extremely depleted with likely fewer than 100 individuals.
