About This Species

The most abundant of the three right whale species, reaching 16-18m (52-59ft) and up to 80 tons, inhabiting Southern Hemisphere oceans between 20°-60°S latitude. Distinguished by their V-shaped blow, rotund body, and distinctive white callosities used for individual identification. Successfully recovering from historical whaling with current population around 13,600 individuals.
