About This Species

Third-largest baleen whale reaching 15-20m and up to 20 tons, inhabiting temperate and subpolar waters worldwide while avoiding tropical and polar extremes. One of the fastest whales reaching speeds up to 30 mph, often confused with Bryde's whales but preferring cooler waters. Population severely depleted by 20th century whaling with an estimated 300,000 individuals killed.
